Louisiana drivers now have a new option for car insurance, with General Motors Insurance launching its services in the state.
Governor Jeff Landry praised the move, crediting it to the recent tort reform package that was signed into law. “General Motors Insurance coming to Louisiana is a testament to the work we accomplished this legislative session to bring about real insurance reform,” Landry said. “Louisiana families deserve more options in this mandated market, and we are incredibly proud to welcome GM to our state. I am confident this is just the beginning of a more consumer-friendly insurance market.”
Long-Awaited Arrival of GM Insurance
The Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI) stated in a press release that General Motors has had the authority to offer car insurance in the state since 2006. However, the company has been licensed by the state as a producer agency for General Motors Insurance Services, Inc. since 2019.
In December 2024, the GM National Insurance Company submitted a new private passenger car insurance product for review, which was approved in March. The product officially launched in July 2025.
Reform Efforts Continue
Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple also commented on the significance of the move, attributing it to the hard work of state legislators. “Through the hard work of members of the Legislature, we were able to get a handful of great legal reform bills to the Governor’s desk. The bills that the Governor signed will take effect in the coming months,” Temple said. “I am hopeful that, in time, we will see the fruits of those labors, but the great step made this year is not the end of the race.”
