Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America has confirmed a significant cyber attack that compromised personal data of many of its customers and employees. The company revealed that the breach occurred on July 16, 2025, when a malicious actor gained access to a third-party, cloud-based CRM system used by Allianz Life.
A spokesperson for Allianz Life stated that the threat actor employed a social engineering technique to gain unauthorized access to personally identifiable information (PII) belonging to the majority of Allianz Life’s clients, financial professionals, and a select group of employees. However, Allianz Life emphasized that there is no evidence that the company’s internal network, including its policy administration system, was accessed during the attack.
In response to the breach, Allianz Life took immediate steps to contain the attack and notified the FBI. While the company did not specify how many individuals were affected, it confirmed that the breach impacted the majority of its 1.4 million U.S. customers.
Although Allianz Life has not yet identified the hacking group behind the attack, some cybersecurity experts believe the notorious collective Scattered Spider may be responsible. Google’s Threat Intelligence Group had previously warned that Scattered Spider was targeting U.S. insurance companies, having shifted its focus from UK and U.S. retail industries.
John Hultquist, Chief Analyst at Google’s Threat Intelligence Group, stated that Scattered Spider typically targets one industry at a time. He advised that insurance companies should be vigilant against social engineering tactics aimed at call centers and help desks. Hultquist further stressed the importance of multi-factor authentication (MFA), strong access controls, and enhanced visibility across corporate networks to mitigate future risks.
Allianz Life operates globally, with over 125 million customers worldwide, and plans to begin notifying affected individuals starting August 1, 2025.
