The federal government has suspended funding for health insurance services in Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, leading to the discontinuation of coverage by State Life Insurance Company in these regions, Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal, announced in the National Assembly.
While health insurance continues to support millions of families in other provinces, the suspension leaves residents in Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan without critical medical coverage.
Currently, about 33 million families in Punjab, 24 million in Balochistan, and 10 million in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa benefit from government-backed health insurance programs.
The decision has sparked concerns about access to healthcare and financial protection against medical expenses for the affected regions, with residents now facing increased difficulties in managing health costs without insurance.
The government has yet to provide detailed reasons for the funding halt but is expected to address the issue in the near future. Healthcare advocates are urging swift action to restore or replace the suspended insurance services to safeguard vulnerable populations.
