Booking a holiday comes with many tasks that aren’t fun but are very important. Travel insurance is one of those tasks. It may seem boring, but it’s worth taking the time to get it right.
Many standard holiday insurance policies, including basic ones added on to home insurance, often cover cycling. For example, my own insurance from Lloyds includes mountain biking as part of its coverage. For many people, that might be enough.
But for mountain biking as it is often done—on tough trails or races—this basic cover usually isn’t enough. That’s where specialized mountain biking insurance, like the plans offered by Yellow Jersey, becomes useful.
Looking closely at my own travel insurance, provided by Allianz through Lloyds, I found a vague statement: “Includes golf cover and cover for certain sports and leisure activities.” This wasn’t clear, so I checked the details.
On pages 40 and 41 of the policy, I found the first mention of bike riding. It said: “Cycling (no racing).” Since I have raced while on holiday before, I realized those races might not have been covered.
The policy also states: “Mountain biking on designated trail/route.” That’s all it says.
This raised some concerns. During a recent trip to Morzine, I rode in ‘freeride’ areas, which are off-trail and not ‘designated routes.’ Also, many riders join events like the famous Passporte du Soleil race. Thousands participate each year—some race, some ride for fun. This policy probably doesn’t cover those who race.
If you plan to race during your travels, this kind of insurance likely won’t protect you.
