Racing fans planning to travel to the Isle of Man for the Manx Grand Prix and Classic TT are being reminded to have proper travel insurance before their trip.
Manx Care, the island’s healthcare provider, advises all visitors to ensure they are adequately covered. Even those protected by the reciprocal healthcare agreement between the Isle of Man and the UK may face gaps in coverage.
This agreement helps residents from England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland with most healthcare costs during their visit. However, it does not cover all services in every situation.
Visitors from outside the UK usually are not covered by this agreement. They can only access urgent and emergency medical care free of charge, according to NHS Overseas Visitors Regulations 2011. Other treatments, including hospital stays after emergency care, medicines, and tests, will need to be paid for unless they fall under specific exceptions, like infectious disease treatment.
Overseas patients admitted to hospital must provide insurance details or pay their medical bills before leaving.
Oliver Radford, Manx Care’s interim executive director of partnerships, performance, and improvement, said: “Anyone needing urgent treatment will receive it immediately. Insurance questions will never delay necessary care.”
He added, “We encourage all visitors, including UK residents, to have suitable travel insurance. The reciprocal healthcare agreement does not cover every situation, and medical costs can become very expensive.”
Radford also reminded visitors to bring enough prescription medicine and any other health supplies they may need during their stay. “We want everyone to enjoy the events safely and without worry.”
