Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance is advancing its insurance screening processes using artificial intelligence (AI), aiming to improve both customer convenience and operational efficiency.
The company recently introduced AI Medical Review, designed to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of cancer diagnosis and surgical benefit screenings. The system automatically analyzes medical documents—including certificates, test results, and surgical records—leveraging extensive medical data. By combining optical character recognition (OCR) technology with Generative AI, the traditionally time-consuming handwritten document review process has been dramatically shortened, while maintaining consistent and reliable results.
Previously, verifying a cancer diagnosis required not only a doctor’s certificate but also a comprehensive review of pathological and clinical data, such as biopsy and fine-needle aspiration tests. Manual review of dozens of pages was labor-intensive and inconsistent. With AI Medical Review, the proportion of review personnel has been reduced by approximately 55%, improving accuracy, streamlining work processes, and reducing business costs.
Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance is also applying AI to long-term insurance screenings. Its machine-learning-based “Long-Term Insurance Sickness Review System (Long-Term U)” automatically evaluates medical and claim histories to determine optimal coverage. Beyond approving subscriptions, the system can suggest conditional adjustments like surcharges or partial coverage depending on the insured’s profile. Since its initial application in 2021, the system has expanded to all long-term insurance products, increasing screening approval rates from 71% to 90%. The technology was patented in March 2024 for its originality and innovation.
Kim Ki-pyeong, head of Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance’s Long-Term Compensation AI division, said, “AI technology enhances customer satisfaction by increasing both the speed and accuracy of insurance reviews. We plan to extend AI applications to other diseases and diagnostic areas beyond cancer.”
Industry experts note that AI-driven screening systems are becoming increasingly widespread in the insurance sector. Effective use of AI throughout cancer diagnosis and long-term insurance processing could become a key differentiator in a competitive market.
Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance continues to invest in its AI Medical Review system, strengthening the competitiveness of its AI-based insurance services, with patent applications completed as recently as August 2025.
