APA Insurance Uganda and Hollard Health Launch Advanced International Health Insurance Solution

by Celia

APA Insurance Uganda, in collaboration with Hollard Health, has launched APA International Health, a new health insurance solution offering coverage of up to Shs36 billion. The product was introduced on September 16 in Kampala and is expected to revitalize Uganda’s insurance industry, which has faced low penetration rates for years. Currently, less than 1% of Uganda’s population is covered by health insurance. Experts attribute this situation to limited public awareness, affordability challenges, and a strong reliance on out-of-pocket payments.

The new plan integrates advanced technology with a personalized approach to healthcare. Members receive tools and information to manage their health proactively. APA International Health is designed for individuals, families, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and corporate clients, aiming to improve both healthcare experiences and outcomes. The program focuses on preventive care and wellness, providing comprehensive support and easy access to high-quality medical services.

A standout feature of APA International Health is the HealthMov wellness app. This mobile application enables members to monitor their health directly from their smartphones. The app tracks well-being indicators and encourages positive lifestyle changes by rewarding users for healthy behaviors. Coverage options vary based on the chosen plan and extend across Africa, India, Europe, and worldwide. Five different plans are available, each offering wellness incentives designed to lower costs and enhance overall health.

Ashok Shah, Group CEO of Apollo Investments Limited, emphasized that the partnership between APA Insurance and Hollard Health aims to promote healthier living and reduce healthcare costs in the region. “With APA and Hollard Health’s combined expertise, innovative solutions, and commitment to customer satisfaction, we are setting a new standard for healthcare coverage,” Shah stated.

Uganda has the second youngest population globally, with 78% under the age of 35. This tech-savvy demographic is well-positioned to adopt digital health insurance solutions like APA International Health. There is also a shift in health challenges from communicable diseases to non-communicable diseases linked to lifestyle choices. As a result, wellness-focused insurance plans are increasingly relevant for employers and individuals.

Technology-Driven Features and Tailored Coverage Meet Unique Needs

Tobe Hope, CEO of Hollard Health, stressed the importance of customized insurance solutions for Africa. “Africa’s demands are unique. We are committed to helping the continent thrive by offering cost-effective health insurance that meets its diverse needs,” Hope said. The new product aims to make quality healthcare accessible for all Ugandans by providing clear information and smart tools for informed decisions.

APA International Health features a modular design that allows members to select benefits suited to their specific needs, with coverage limits up to Shs36 billion. Distribution is agent-friendly, with sales managed through brokers and agents. Service delivery is supported by Henner, a trusted third-party administrator known for reliability and client satisfaction.

The HealthMov app stands at the center of this offering. It goes beyond traditional insurance by using facial and movement scans to monitor vital signs such as heart rate, breathing rate, stress levels, and BMI. The app provides personalized feedback along with lifestyle advice, goal tracking tools, educational resources, and behavior insights. Manan Desai, CEO of APA Uganda, described it as “a virtual doctor, personal trainer, health coach, and mentor in every member’s pocket.” Members can also access telehealth consultations and second medical opinions via the app for timely care from anywhere.

Apollo Investments Limited entered into a strategic partnership with Hollard International in November 2023 to expand business opportunities across Africa. Shah added that collaboration is essential for driving change in healthcare: “APA Insurance and Hollard Health are dedicated to empowering individuals to lead healthier lives and access quality healthcare when needed most.” With affordable plans, comprehensive coverage options, high-quality medical services, and efficient claims processing, the companies aim to meet East Africa’s evolving healthcare needs now and in the future.
