Health Insurance Denials Discussed at Gilbert Town Hall Over Claims

by Celia

Healthcare providers and patients in Arizona voiced their growing frustrations over exorbitant out-of-pocket costs, claim denials, and AI-driven responses during a town hall meeting on Sept. 15 in Gilbert. The session, led by Attorney General Kris Mayes, was the first of several planned “listening sessions” aimed at addressing complaints regarding the healthcare insurance system in the Southeast Valley and across the state.

A Call for Action

Attorney General Mayes opened the session by acknowledging the serious concerns voiced by Arizonans, stating: “From the stories that Arizonans have shared with the public, we are concerned that some health insurance companies may be participating in potentially unlawful practices.”

Many attendees at the Southeast Regional Library shared stories of battling with insurance companies over denied medical claims. Their accounts highlighted an often unjust system that leaves patients scrambling to cover medical costs, sometimes even resorting to bankruptcy.

Shocking Denial Rates

The statistics presented at the town hall painted a troubling picture. In 2023, the national average for denied in-network claims was 19%. In Arizona, however, that rate was higher at 21%, meaning one in five patients were forced to face claim denials and out-of-pocket costs for necessary medical procedures.

Many of these denied patients found themselves financially burdened by medical debt, and in some tragic cases, patients had to forego essential medical care due to the cost.

Personal Impact on Attorney General Mayes

Mayes spoke passionately about how these issues affected her personally, particularly with her own family’s health struggles. She revealed that her sister was denied life-saving surgery while being treated in California. Her sister needed a deep flap surgery to reconstruct breast tissue following a double mastectomy. This microsurgery, considered by many doctors to be the most suitable and healthy option for breast reconstruction, was denied by insurance companies, despite being recommended by healthcare professionals.

Mayes emphasized how personal this issue is for her, stating: “Another reason that, quite frankly, I’m personally interested in this, is about my family and some things that we discovered in the course of my mother and my sister and both of my maternal grandmothers having been diagnosed with breast cancer.”

She expressed her concern about how many insurance companies do not cover such specialized microsurgeries, which can make a significant difference in the recovery and quality of life for patients.

A Growing Crisis

The town hall revealed just how pervasive the problem of health insurance denials is across Arizona, particularly for those seeking critical and life-saving care. With the rising cost of healthcare, many Arizonans are finding themselves squeezed by insurance policies that refuse to cover necessary treatments or procedures.

Attorney General Mayes vowed to continue listening to the concerns of Arizona residents and work towards a solution that would ensure better coverage and accountability from health insurance companies. She hinted that her office might take legal action if it finds that insurance companies are violating state laws or engaging in unfair practices.

A Growing Movement

The town hall was a critical step in a broader push to reform healthcare insurance in Arizona. With more sessions planned, it is clear that the state is taking action to address the health insurance crisis affecting many residents. By amplifying these voices, Attorney General Mayes hopes to hold insurance companies accountable and protect patients who are denied coverage at their most vulnerable moments.
