The cost of car insurance in Wales has seen a significant reduction, with prices dropping by an average of £116 (-17%) over the past year, according to new data.
The average price of car insurance in Wales is now £555, although some drivers may still pay higher premiums. This decline is highlighted in the latest car insurance price index from Confused, powered by WTW. The index is based on more than 6 million quotes, making it one of the most comprehensive for new policies in the UK.
Drivers in South Wales have benefited the most, with average premiums falling to £572, a £116 (-17%) decrease compared to the same time last year. Meanwhile, in Central & North Wales, prices are now £514, marking a £70 (-12%) reduction over the past year.
Among Welsh cities, Cardiff has seen the most significant drop in insurance prices. The average premium in the capital is now £596, after a £130 (-18%) fall year-on-year.
In Central & North Wales, Shrewsbury stands out with the largest savings in the region—an £81 (-14%) reduction, bringing the average premium to £503.
Despite the overall decline, Cardiff remains the most expensive area in Wales for car insurance. In Central & North Wales, Llandudno has the highest average premium, at £526, although it has also seen a £63 (-11%) drop in the past 12 months.
