Air Canada’s recent three-day flight attendant strike may have ended, but its effects continue to reverberate. Hundreds of flights were grounded, tens of thousands of travelers were stranded, and many policyholders were left questioning what their travel insurance actually covers.
Dan Keon, Vice President of Marketing and Insights at Allianz Global Assistance Canada, notes that the strike underscores not only the operational vulnerabilities of air travel but also the need for clearer communication in the insurance sector.
“Airline strikes are nothing new,” Keon said. “This latest disruption shows just how impactful they can be.
While Canada has robust air passenger protection regulations, which place primary responsibility on the airline, insurers must now reassess their policies and underwriting strategies to ensure coverage remains relevant for travelers.”
Keon emphasized that the strike also highlighted challenges beyond underwriting. Customer service surges during disruptions reveal how policy language can be misinterpreted or overlooked, signaling a need for clearer terms and better education for policyholders.
