‘1-Peso-a-Day’ Dengue Insurance Launched as Cases Soar Nationwide

by gongshang21

The Department of Health (DOH) is warning the public of a sharp rise in dengue cases. Officials urge people to take action as the rainy season creates more mosquito breeding sites.

Dengue cases are significantly higher than last year. From January to April 2025, the country recorded 95,262 cases. This is a 75% increase from the 54,556 cases reported in the same period in 2024.

The regions with the most cases are Calabarzon, the National Capital Region (NCR), and Central Luzon.

As of June 2025, total cases have exceeded 123,000 nationwide. The disease has caused at least 437 deaths, with most victims being children. Data shows a 7% increase in cases as of August 20. The DOH says it is on high alert and has activated dengue fast lanes in its hospitals.

How to Prevent Dengue

The DOH advises the public to follow the “4S” strategy:

  • Search and destroy mosquito breeding sites.
  • Use Self-protection measures like insect repellent and long sleeves.
  • Seek early consultation if symptoms appear.
  • Support fogging in hotspot areas.

A key reminder is to practice “taob, taktak, tuyo at takip” (overturn, shake, dry, and cover) for all containers that can hold water. Mosquitoes that carry dengue are most active in the early morning and late afternoon. They are also attracted to dark-colored clothing.

Symptoms include a two-day fever plus diarrhea, body aches, eye pain, dizziness, or vomiting. If you experience these, go to a health center or a hospital dengue fast lane immediately.

New Affordable Insurance Option

To help with financial stress, BDO Insure has introduced a new dengue insurance plan. It costs as little as one peso per day.

For an annual premium of P350, a patient receives P10,000 in cash assistance if diagnosed with dengue. A P700 plan provides P20,000. This money can help cover medical bills or lost wages.

The policy can be purchased for oneself, children, a spouse, parents, or even a friend. Each person can only have one policy.

Health experts emphasize that dengue is a persistent and deadly threat. They say prevention is key to protecting families.
