A new study identifies the electric vehicles (EVs) that will be cheapest to insure next year. The list offers a guide for buyers looking to control the total cost of owning an EV.
Mercury Insurance released its annual ranking of the 10 most affordable EVs to insure for 2025. Insurance is a significant but often overlooked part of ownership. On average, EVs cost about 15% more to insure than similar gas-powered cars. This is due to higher repair costs and advanced technology.
The new list helps address this concern. It is based on key factors like repair expenses, vehicle safety ratings, and historical claims data.
“For the tenth year, we’re providing this data to help consumers make informed decisions,” a Mercury Insurance representative said.
The 2025 rankings, listed from most affordable to insure, are:
- Chevrolet Blazer EV
- Chevrolet Equinox EV
- Nissan Leaf
- Kia Niro EV
- Ford F-150 Lightning
- Hyundai Kona EV
- MINI Cooper SE
- Hyundai Ioniq Range (all models)
- Fiat 500e
- Subaru Solterra / Toyota bZ4X
The list includes both new models and established ones like the Nissan Leaf. The starting manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) for these vehicles range from approximately $28,000 to $55,000.
The report coincides with news of more affordable EVs entering the market. General Motors, for example, has confirmed it will revive the Chevrolet Bolt EV with a starting price of around $27,495.
Prospective EV buyers are also urged to consider timing. The federal $7,500 EV tax credit is currently set to expire at the end of September 2025. This incentive can significantly reduce the initial purchase price.
Combined with lower charging and maintenance costs, choosing an EV with affordable insurance can make long-term ownership more economical. This makes the current period a potentially advantageous time for consumers to switch to electric.
