Labor Day Travel Booms: Americans Find Deals, AAA Urges Travel Insurance

by Celia

Millions of Americans are preparing to travel by car, plane, and cruise this Labor Day weekend. Many are finding better deals than last year.

Recent evacuations on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands due to Hurricane Erin serve as a reminder for travelers to consider travel insurance. AAA – The Auto Club Group strongly recommends purchasing coverage before any trip.

“Whether you’re heading out for Labor Day weekend or planning a future getaway, now is a great time to book,” said Debbie Haas, AAA’s vice president of travel. “Domestic travel costs are trending lower, and while international airfare is slightly higher, travelers will find savings on hotels, rental cars, and cruises abroad.”

AAA reports that the price of multi-night domestic hotel stays has dropped 11%, averaging $495 nationwide for the holiday weekend.

With hurricane season at its peak, AAA advises travelers who buy insurance to carefully review policy details, compare options, and consider consulting a travel agent for guidance.

“During the busy Labor Day season, travel insurance offers peace of mind,” Haas said. “It allows travelers to enjoy their vacation without worrying about the what-ifs.”

Fuel costs are expected to remain steady, with the national average near $3.33 per gallon, similar to last year. Prices are unlikely to rise unless Gulf Coast hurricanes intervene.

Traffic may be heavy. Transportation analytics firm INRIX advises drivers to travel early in the day. Saturday afternoon and evening are expected to see the most congestion.

Air travelers within the U.S. are paying an average of $720 for round-trip flights, about 6% less than last year. Multi-day car rentals are down 3%, averaging $545.

Popular domestic destinations include Seattle, Orlando, New York, Boston, and Anchorage. Vancouver leads international bookings, with strong interest also in Rome, Dublin, and London.
