AAA Urges Travelers to Consider Travel Insurance Ahead of Labor Day Weekend Getaways

by Celia

As millions of Americans prepare for Labor Day weekend travel, many are finding better deals compared to last year. With fewer concerns over soaring prices, travelers can expect savings on domestic trips, international airfares, and more.

However, after last week’s evacuations of Hatteras and Ocracoke islands due to Hurricane Erin, AAA strongly recommends that travelers secure travel insurance before heading out. The hurricane season is in full swing, and unforeseen events can disrupt travel plans at any moment.

“Whether you’re traveling for Labor Day or planning a future trip, now is the perfect time to book,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Domestic travel costs are trending lower, and while international airfare has slightly increased, travelers will find savings on hotels, rental cars, and cruises abroad.”

Domestic Travel Deals

AAA reports that the price of hotel stays for the Labor Day weekend is down 11% from last year, with the national average for multi-night stays at $495. Fuel prices are also expected to stay stable, with the national average projected to hover around $3.33 per gallon—on par with last year’s rates.

For those traveling by car, INRIX, a transportation analytics firm, recommends hitting the road early to avoid heavy traffic, particularly on Saturday afternoon and evening when congestion is expected to peak.

Air Travel & Car Rentals

For air travelers, round-trip domestic flights are averaging $720, a 6% decrease from last year. Multi-day car rentals are also more affordable, down 3% to an average of $545.

International Travel Trends

International travelers will see mixed costs this year. Airfare has increased by 8%, averaging $1,470, while hotel rates overseas are slightly lower and rental car prices have dropped significantly, with a 42% decrease to $645. Cruises from international ports are also seeing a 9% reduction.

Top international destinations include Vancouver, Rome, Dublin, London, and Paris. On the domestic front, top holiday destinations include Seattle, Orlando, New York, Boston, and Anchorage.

Why Travel Insurance Matters

With the height of hurricane season arriving, AAA advises those purchasing travel insurance to research their policies carefully. Comparing different options and consulting with a travel agent for personalized recommendations is key.

“Especially during busy travel times like Labor Day, travel insurance provides peace of mind, allowing you to focus on enjoying your vacation without worrying about unexpected events,” Haas added.
