A new option in travel insurance medical screening is now available in the UK as Protectif, a proven and award-winning tool, opens to the wider market. Already used by brands such as Insurancewith and Holidaysafe, Protectif provides insurers and travelers with an alternative to Verisk, which currently handles around 80% of UK medical screenings for travel insurance.
Unlike traditional tools, Protectif focuses on medications rather than conditions, reflecting how people manage their health in real life. This approach may reduce under-declaration and offer a more accurate assessment of individual risk.
First developed in 2006, Protectif enables insurers to provide more personalised and inclusive coverage, particularly for travelers with complex or pre-existing medical conditions. Internal benchmarking has shown potential improvements of up to 20% in loss ratios and reductions of as much as 50% in large claims.

Protectif has been central to Insurancewith’s success, which is known for offering affordable coverage to people with cancer and other long-term conditions. Working closely with medical charities and clinical experts, Protectif is regularly updated to reflect the latest medical guidance, ensuring assessments are based on real-world risk rather than rigid templates.

The new availability of Protectif gives travelers a choice of medical risk screening tools, increasing the chances of accessing affordable travel insurance, particularly for those previously declined or offered high premiums using Verisk.
