A recent analysis of travel insurance claims reveals that medical emergencies account for over half of all claims, while flight and baggage delays together make up nearly a quarter. These findings underscore the growing impact of health and logistical uncertainties on international travel for Indian tourists.
While the pandemic may be in the past, unpredictability remains a major concern for travelers. TATA AIG General Insurance, in its analysis released for World Tourism Day, highlights that health-related risks and operational disruptions are key factors influencing how Indians approach their travels.
Medical Emergencies Lead Insurance Claims
The data from TATA AIG shows that between April 2024 and August 2025, medical emergencies—both outpatient and inpatient—constituted 55% of all travel insurance claims. This category continues to be the most significant driver of insurance purchases, as travelers face the risk of sudden illnesses, injuries, or other medical issues while abroad.
Logistical Issues Take a Significant Share
In addition to medical emergencies, operational disruptions such as flight delays and baggage issues accounted for 23% of all claims. These logistical challenges are now a common stress point for travelers, with delays and cancellations becoming routine in global air travel. As airports struggle to manage growing passenger numbers and airlines grapple with unpredictable weather patterns, many travelers are finding themselves turning to insurance as a safety net against these disruptions.
The Shift Towards Essential Coverage
The data reveals that while medical claims are still the most frequent, more travelers are also seeking coverage for disruptions related to their journeys. As travel unpredictability becomes more common, insurance has shifted from being seen as an optional add-on to an essential tool for mitigating potential issues during international travel.
With airports worldwide under strain and flight delays becoming more frequent, travelers are increasingly relying on travel insurance to safeguard against these unavoidable circumstances.
